Today I received a call from a close friend of mine from back home she was crying and very hysterical. Once she calmed a little she told me her father just had both his legs amputated due to diabetes. After getting off the phone to her I called a few other people I know who suffer with diabetes or have a close relative who do and was pleased to know alhamdulillah they are all fine. Some of whom are following most of the below advice and natural remedies.
Unfortunately many people don’t know that there are ways you can control and even reverse (not always) diabetes the natural way before moving up to the big guns from the Dr.
When I say diabetes I’m implying type 2 diabetes
Diabetes is very dangerous and can lead to many other health conditions when it’s not managed properly, including kidney disease, blindness, leg and food amputations, nerve damage, and even death.
Diabetes is a completely preventable and reversible condition, and with diet and lifestyle changes, you can greatly reduce your chances of getting diabetes or reverse the condition even if you’ve already been diagnosed.
Before looking at how to cure this illness let’s try to understand the underlying causes of diabetes as it usually develops because of a combination of things such as:
- Having a poor diet such as too much sugar, low quality food, lack of nutrients , minerals and vitamins
- Being overweight
- Having high levels of inflammation
- Living a lazy lifestyle
- Experiencing high amounts of stress
- Having a family history of diabetes (especially a parent or sibling)
- Having high blood pressure or a history of heart disease
- Having a hormonal condition (like hyperthyroidism, PCOS etc)
- Taking certain medications (like those that disrupt insulin production)
If you notice more than one of these in your lifestyle then its time for a change even if you don’t have diabetes you may be pre diabetic. Alhamdulillah there are ways to reverse diabetes naturally. Please keep track of your blood sugar levels and notify your Dr with any changes you make.
What To Remove From Your Diet?
*Remove These Foods to Reverse Diabetes Naturally
Certain foods negatively affect your blood sugar levels, cause inflammation and trigger an immune responses.
- Refined sugar
- Conventional cow’s milk
- GMO foods
- Hydrogenated oils
*Introduce These Foods to Treat Diabetes
- Foods high in fiber
- Foods high in chromium
- Magnesium-rich foods like spinach, chard, pumpkin seeds, almonds, yogurt and black beans
- Healthy fats
- Clean protein chicken broth or any bone broth, organic grass-fed chicken, lentils.
- Foods with a low glycemic load low glycemic foods are non-starchy vegetables, stone fruits and berries, nuts, seeds, avocados, coconut, organic meat, eggs, wild fish, and raw pastured dairy.
Other Things To Try
Cinnamon has the ability to lower blood sugar levels and improve your sensitivity to insulin. A study conducted at Western University of Health Sciences in Pomona, Calif. Found that the consumption of cinnamon is associated with a statistically significant decrease in plasma glucose levels, LDL cholesterol and triglyceride levels. Cinnamon consumption also helped increase HDL cholesterol (good cholesterol) levels.
Put one teaspoon to food, smoothies or tea. You may add cinnamon oil to coconut oil or olive oil and massage onto your veins on your wrists.
Taking Fish Oil supplement can help improve some symptoms of diabetes by reducing triglyceride levels and raising HDL cholesterol (good cholesterol) levels. Research published in the Journal of Research in Medical Sciences shows that omega-3 fatty acids found in fish oil are necessary for proper insulin function, preventing insulin intolerance and reducing inflammation. You only need to take 1,000 milligrams daily, some capsules advise 1500mg
Alpha Lipoic Acid
Alpha lipoic acid is an antioxidant that helps turn glucose into fuel for the body. It effectively improves insulin sensitivity and reduces symptoms of diabetes such as weakness, pain and numbness that’s caused by nerve damage. Our bodies naturally make alpha lipoic acid but sometimes need some help. Foods like broccoli, spinach and tomatoes can help us unfortunately these days foods aren’t like they use to be so taking a supplement will increase the amount that circulates in your body insha Allah which can be extremely beneficial when trying to reverse diabetes naturally.
Insulin comes along to decrease sugar, but with diabetes the body doesn’t respond properly to insulin and the blood sugar levels rise. Something amazing about tea is through a complex biochemical reaction hibiscus and green tea (individually or drank together) can help to lower the blood sugar levels.
I have pasted some of the main key points here but please see the bottom of the post for the link to the whole test study about green tea and hibiscus tea.
Something else to read…
A clinical trial using green tea and sour tea, like hibiscus tea found that patients in both groups had a significant increase in HDL ( good cholesterol). Conclusion: This study shows that the use of 150 ml infusion of green tea or sour tea, three times a day for four weeks, has positive effect on insulin resistance and certain lipoproteins in type 2 DM.
Tea is the most common beverage in the world.1 There are many kinds of tea such as black, sour, white, green tea etc.2 In petals of sour tea flower (Hibiscus Sabdariffa), there is a mixture of different alkaloids like cyanidin 3, rutinocod, delfinidin, inisaldids, galactose, hibcitin, pectin, polysaccharides, mucopolysaccarides, gosptin, ascorbic acid, citric acid, antocyanin, beta-carotene, sitosterol, esteric acid, etc.3 Each of these composites can have various effects on the human body.
Different clinical trials regarding the effect of sour tea on humans and animals have shown that this herb has several positive effects like decrease in systolic and diastolic blood pressure.4,5 Phenolic protoctechui acid being present in sour tea, has protective antioxidant effect on the liver.6 It also causes apoptosis of cancer cells.7 Antocyanin like delphinidin 3-sambubioside present in sour tea has also the same effect.8
Green tea (Camellia Sinesis) is enriched with flavonoids, used as herbal medicine worldwide.9 This herb is enriched with polyphenols, catechin epicatechin, epigallocatechin and epigallocatechin-3-gallate. It also contains other composites like caffeine, tannins, vitamins, and saponins.9,10 Several different studies indicate that green tea has antioxidant, antimutagenic, antibacterial effect, anti-inflammatory and hypo-cholesterolaemia action.11–15 This is due to the effect of catechin and galic acid present in green tea.16 Certain investigations also show that catechin found in green tea inhibits the proliferation of breast cancer cells in vitro studies.17
Patients and Methods
Study Design and Participants
A randomized clinical trial was conducted during 2011-2012 with the participation of 100 patients with type 2 diabetes mellitus under the supervision of Yazd Diabetic Research Centre.
The 100 patients qualified for inclusion were randomly divided into two groups of green tea (GT) and sour tea (ST) users. This was carried out using a sequential list prepared based on tables of random numbers. Both groups were given the specified number of label tea packets having equal weight. The patients under study were advised to prepare the specified tea at home according to the informed instructions on tea preparation, drink tea three times a day (2 h after the main meal) for a period of four weeks.
Before starting the clinical trail, the patients were debriefed on how to prepare the tea bags each containing 3-gram of the specified tea. The participants in GT group were instructed to add one teabag in 150ml of hot water at 60-70oC and drink after 5 minutes. The participants in the ST group were instructed to boil the 3-gram sour teabag in 150ml of 60-70oC water and wait for 10-15 minutes and then drink the tea. In case of distaste for the tea flavor, consumption of one date palm was allowed.
