When I was young many people would use the word ‘dill’ to insult someone who was a little, well slow but who would have thought Dill is actually an amazing herb

Dill has been used for centuries to creat soaps, beauty products, medicine, drinks etc. It has a wide variety of uses. I will list some below and comment further on the ones I used Dill for and my experience with it.

Dill weed is a good source of calcium, manganese and iron, and as an anti oxidant food, its  flavonoids provide anti-inflammatory and antiviral properties that give it a lot of amazing health benefits.

1. May Help Reduce Menstrual Cramps

There are about 12 different herbs that claim to help and often do reduce menstrual cramps such as dill, chamomile, cinnamon, rose, fennel, fenugreek, ginger, guava, rhubarb, uzara, valerian and zataria, there are also some non-herbal supplements (fish oil,melatonin, vitamins B1 and E, and zinc sulphate)

2. Helps Reduce Depression

I myself have used dill regularly in the past 7 years or more for my own personal use after birth and mostly the first years of breastfeeding. Those sleepless nights bundled with young children can reek havoc on your mood. Dill has been a go to for me and my family. I recommend dill to most people when suffering any form of cold, flu or viral infection.

A study published in the American Journal of Therapeutics aimed to investigate the antidepressant and analgesic properties of the aqueous extract of dill from the South of Morocco. Extract of the dill plant was administered to subjects and showed a significant antidepressant and analgesic effect when compared with the drug references (sertaline and tramadol).

Dill weed produces no adverse effects. A Phytonutrient study of the aqueous extract of the dill plant showed benefits from the polyphenols, flavonoids and tannins it contains.

3. Lowers Cholesterol

Dill weed provides exceptional cholesterol lowering benefits making it very beneficial for those who suffer high cholestrol or Diabetes. Through careful studies, it was determined that the effect of dill extract and dill tablets on lipid profile, liver enzymes, gene expression and enzymatic activity was positive in hamsters with high cholesterol. ( I don’t condone testing on animals but that was the test study) The subjects were randomly divided into six groups and received daily dosages of dill in its various forms. After one month, when compared with the group that did not receive the dill, the lipid profile, blood glucose and liver enzymes significantly decreased in all dill tablet or dill extract treated groups. This is an amazing discovery yet further tests are needed.

4. May Treat Epilepsy

I have some close friends that have children who suffer epilepsy. It is very hard to watch the struggle of these parents . I wouldn’t suggest removing meds all together because the symptoms, such as seizures can be very dangerous. It is important to have an open dialogue with your Dr and ask about combing Dill or other herbs with current meds.

Third-world countries have been using plants to help with epilepsy for centuries.  The Malaysian Journal of Medical Sciences, the aqueous extract of dill leaves was reviewed for its effects on treating convulsions and epilepsy. The evaluation defined the plant as having a traditional medical reputation for profound anticonvulsant activities, potentially working as a natural alternative treatment for epilepsy.

5. Provides a Source of Energy and Aids Digestion/ Cures Diarreah

The triacylglycerol (TAG) structure and distribution of fatty acids of seed oils determines the final physical properties of the oils and may affect digestion, absorption and metabolism, and physical and technological properties of TAGs. In a study conducted by Texas Southern University and Agilent Technologies, fixed oils from the fruits of dill, caraway, cumin, coriander, anise, carrot, celery, fennel and Khella, all from the Apiaceae family, were extracted at room temperature. Petroselinic acid was the major fatty acid in all samples ranging from 57 percent to 82 percent. This means that including dill in your diet on a regular basis may help you obtain some important fatty acids.

6. Contains Antimicrobial Effects Cures Staphylococcus Aureus

Dill has been investigated for its various antimicrobial effects. In research, the essential oil of dill weed has been shown to be effective against several bacteria strains, completely inhibiting the growth of Fusarium graminearum, a devastating disease of wheat and barley caused by the fungal plant pathogen, as well as being toxic to five other bacteria, including Staphylococcus aureus.

In the past few years I have noticed an increase in Staph infections, MRSA and bacterial infections including thrush. Dill works amazing if consumed or boiled down and applied to the skin for treating such ailments.

7. Protects Against Free Radicals

Research showed that the antioxidant activity of dill is comparable to ascorbic acid, alpha-tocopherol and quercetin. Making dill an anti-inflammatory and analgesic properties. The antioxidant activity of the aqueous extracts of various herbs, including dill, revealing the beneficial scavenging of superoxide radicals.

8. Carpal Tunnel syndrome

This is a huge one for many people I know using computers and phones often, they suffer from inflammation of their carpal tunnel. Adding Dill to your diet especially as a drink is a great natural cure if combined with other anti inflammatory options like, cranberries,  ginger, chamomile etc.

9. Relieves insomnia

A nice tea of Dill combined with any other herb if you’re not keen on the taste is great for helping you get to sleep at night

10. Cures Respiratory disorders and helps bone health

Dill is well-known for its respiratory healing properties, and it is particularly useful when it comes to helping to cure asthma, bronchitis, flu, chough, and more
